AI invades the home via Google

Google’s Artificial Intelligence home entertainment hub – Google Home- has launched in the Australian market and is poised to try and shake up the competitive streaming space.

The voice-operated connected device launched with inbuilt integration of streaming providers  Netflix and Stan, and has also partnered with Spotify.  The AI function allows users to control the streaming platforms via voice as a starting place and will be progressively rolling out third-party apps for added services.

Australia is only the fourth country where Google has released a localised version home, after launching it in the USA last October, followed by the UK and Canada.

The Google Assistant device also connects with Google services, user calendars and will playback search results.

Like Siri it also answers questions, translates phrases plus much more in addition to supplying the latest news and movie reviews all in response to voice commands.

Media brands including Fox Sports, ABC News, The Australian, Huffington Post, TechCrunch and Sky News are part of the available news services.

As part of the ‘connected home’ function, it also has a capability to connect to lights, music and other domestic devices via voice control.

Google is also rolling out it's Wifi service so that homes using the device can have a seamless internet connection via ‘mesh wifi’ to allow coverage in digitally compromised areas.  Google WiFi aims to make it easier to get WiFi signals into all corners of the house, for $199 for one base station, or for $499 for three stations which can be meshed together to form a single, extended hotspot.
